It is important to open up your range so that when you speak your voice can naturally move within and beyond your optimum pitch range. But please do not make deliberate pitch choices that come out sounding like grade 7 poetry readings. Any pitch shifts you make should be driven by and connected seamlessly to thought and emotion.
When you do pitch exercises I suggest that you ‘exaggerate’ the direction of the pitch shift using bending, bouncing, pointing and jumping. If you do, you will reduce the possibility of locking up your throat and vocal chords as you work.
