Finding the Energy in Speech by Choosing Between Words
Go through your text, and find places where you can substitute words with other words with similar meanings. If you want you can even take the text and alter it in total, sentence by sentence. Now deliver the text to the other actors (or audience), using all the variations you have chosen. Now play the lines alternating between the two. Notice how each word carries its own energy. Notice how your intention varies. Notice your connection to the words, and your connection to the ideas. Investigate your character’s relationship to the words they chose. Investigate your relationship to the words you chose. What do you find? Is the text perhaps a little fuller than you first thought? Are you a little brighter than you realised? Are you discovering your latent energy and creativity? I think you probably are. Enjoy!
