A Timeline

  • I began freelancing at the SABC in 1997. And while I was working in the training department I realised that although we South Africans have a lot of dreams, we also seemed to suffer from a serious dose of self doubt. I became quite troubled by how our rather well developed sense of political freedom was not translating into a sense of personal freedom - the freedom to stand up and speak and to be seen as dynamic individuals with our own thoughts and voices, free of the restrictions of race, class, gender, sexual, and political identity.
  • In February 2002 a huge argument that I had at a friend’s 50th birthday party lead me to write my still unpublished story The Boy Who Sounded Different. After writing it I went on to write almost solidly for a 3 to 6 month period. I now write more sporadically as I am currently more focused on publishing.
  • Several months later after being encouraged by friends I started thinking about getting them published.
  • Catherine Falconer first saw the stories in mid 2002 and began experimenting with illustrations almost straight away. After a few months with style and brief in hand she began the process of bringing All the People of the World to life.
  • In late 2003 I began investigating how to get published but soon realized that the process was extremely difficult, disheartening, cut-throat and that many publishers were somewhat dismissive
  • After 18 months, tons of discouragement and a number of quite unprofessional experiences I gave up on the local publishing scene.
  • Disappointed by the local industry I did not even entertain the idea of looking for foreign publishers
  • Then in July 2004 I made the decision to self publish.
  • All The People Of The World came off the printing press on 03 September 2004
  • Thandi Counts To Ten came off the press on 30 May 2005
  • He Sneezed On Me made it into my hands in finished form on the 14 September 2006
  • Palace Malice was delivered on the 13 June 2007
