Catherine Falconer (nee Feek)
Catherine is currently based in Pietermaritzburg, where she runs her own business. She has been based in Maritzburg for many years now where she also works as a freelance illustrator. Catherine studied at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 1991 – 1993, where she completed a BA in Fine Arts and English,
From 1995 – 1997 she worked as a photography assistant to Anthony Bannister, the renowned wildlife photographer, and from 1997 – 1999 she worked at Birdman Foundry, a Fine Arts sculpture studio, converting original art works into bronze.
As an illustrator Catherine has mostly worked for Shuter & Shuter, though she has worked on some Media in Education Training (MIET) materials, and has also illustrated the US published book “The Oglin”, a story expounding the principles of holistic land management.
Catherine worked with me on both All the People of the World and Thandi Counts to Ten, where she explored a wonderful multicultural urban aesthetic. To get the intense colour and the amazing brightness that is so much a mark of both these books, Catherine painted with ink on paper. In both these books her work is bold and very detailed and she brought a great creative spirit, a witty intelligence and a mountain of talent to the project.
